A Girl's Curriculum Part 3
Once the more traditional home schooling starts, of course she needs to learn the basics, reading, writing, calculating, and as we have pointed out before, the bible is not only the guideline in a godly education, but also provides a lot of the written and read material. Once this phase starts, she will be enabled and encouraged to study God's word, to read for herself and with the family what she has been seeing and hearing about all her life so far, and many of the principles she already saw at work, for example while working in the garden, will become more transparent to her.
When the foundation is laid for an understanding of the principles involved, those principles will be pointed out and made visible to her in the course of the family's daily life, as home schooling does not need to follow a schedule like a school does. Home schooling does indeed include times when skills are acquired and practiced while sitting at a desk, but it neither begins nor ends there. Information can be collected and considered using books and computers, but also while being in the garden or in the kitchen, and both a microscope and a telescope might come in handy just as well as paper and pencil. Home schooling might take place at night under the starry skies, identifying Polaris, just as well as in the morning while watering the beans and considering the beetle damage to the foliage, or sitting at a desk later one trying to figure out how much money the family spent on cat food this year already. Home schooling takes place when considering all the different occasions in the Hebrew bible when the word 'elohim' is used, and what that says about the meaning of the word, just as well as in playing spelling games or drawing a picture of the woodpecker that had breakfast on the trunk of the apple tree this morning. There is no end to learning occasions in everyday life at home, no end to opportunities of enjoying God's creation and our role in it, and learning how to fulfill it worthily.
