On Submission Part 3
4. When it comes to determining how far submission to your husband goes, it's simple: If he wants you to commit a sin, you are to refuse to do that. But this doesn't mean that every little bit of the bible that you think you understand better than he does allows you to just dismiss his decisions on the matter. Practically speaking, if your husband doesn't want you to wear a head covering, no matter how excited you are about the idea, you are not to wear one, end of discussion. The husband is the one who has to lead the house in all respects, practically, spiritually, in everything, and if he decides that wearing a head covering has no bearing on your salvation and is not appropriate these days, wearing one anyway is rebellion. Eph 5:24 says
"Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.",which means everything, but sin cannot be included. A godly husband doesn't ask his wife to defile herself and his house in God's eyes. If he does, he sets himself up to be a higher authority than God himself, which is the sin that got Lucifer thrown out of heaven - pride (Is 14:12-15).
So why be submissive in everything, very practically, and not just in my head ? Because it is the attitude of a wife who loves God and her husband and who knows her place in God's plan. In the same way, a godly husband should be obedient to God's Law and lead his house accordingly. It is his house, and he will be held accountable for how he leads his wife and children. Joshua could only be so sure that his house would serve the Lord even after his death (Jos 24:15) because his house, his wife or wives, children, servants, followed his lead in everything, and would not fall away from God after his death. If our husbands can be as sure of this as Joshua obviously was, our role as a help meet was well fulfilled, and our husbands have a good chance of hearing "well done, good and faithful servant" (Mat 25:21) on the Last Day.
