Lady Lesson #8: The Principle of PurityNowadays, girls oftentimes only think of purity in terms of entering marriage untouched. This particular area of purity is particularly important because once you become "one flesh" with a man, he is your husband before God, and there is to be only one husband in your life. While this is certainly a purity to protect and to reserve for your future husband, dear lady in training, it is by far not the only area in which purity matters. So what else is there to pay attention to in terms of purity ? There are, for example, your words. James warns us that the tongue can do great harm (Jas 1:26, 3:5-8), so it is important to keep your words honest yet kind, open yet modest, truthful yet demure. Then, there are your thoughts. What good does it do you to tame your tongue, when your thoughts dwell on things that are far from God's plan for you. Keep your eyes away from worthless things, so that your thoughts dwell on worthles things (Psa 119:37). Furthermore, there is your heart. Purity in heart lies at the foundation of your tamed tongue and your worthy thoughts. "Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life" (Pro 4:23),Proverbs says. The heart must be made free of coveting and idolatry so that it can dwell, joyfully, on God's word, and so that your obedience and trust come from the heart, and are not just lip service or easily uprooted. All in all, purity is an all encompassing attitude. It includes the way you speak and the way you think, it includes separating yourself from wrongdoing and idleness, it includes being chaste and trusting that God will lead you in the right way while you dwell on His word and go about doing His business.
