The Fear of the Lord

I recently looked up the phrase "the fear of the Lord" in eSword when I was working on an article, and it was so wonderful to read through all the verses it gave me that I thought I'd share this experience here on Joshuah's House. Note particularly how Job defines wisdom, and the way "the fear of the Lord" is mentioned in Isaiah's prophecy about the coming of Christ.... Note too the blessings that come from and with the fear of the Lord.

Incidentally, for all those who would like to think of this "fear" as "reverence" only, please consider the following verse first:

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Mat 10:28)

Note then that the Greek word used is the very word we derive the word "phobia" from, whereas the Hebrew word points to moral reverence only, and otherwise would indicate simply fear. Please also consider the connection of knowledge, wisdom, and fear... Would you not call it wisdom to fear (rather than revere) a tiger if you lived in a place where meeting one was an everyday possibility ? Would you not call it knowledge to look left and right and left again before crossing the street because you fear the cars that come and might run you over, rather than revering them ?

So here are my search results:

"From where, then, does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding? It is hidden from the eyes of all living and concealed from the birds of the air. Abaddon and Death say, 'We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.' "God understands the way to it, and he knows its place. For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. When he gave to the wind its weight and apportioned the waters by measure, when he made a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder, then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out.
And he said to man, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.'" (Job 28:20-28)

"The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether." (Psa 19:9)

"Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD." (Psa 34:11)

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!" (Psa 111:10)

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction."(Pro 1:7)

"Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
"How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster." (Pro 1:20-33)

"My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. (Pro 2:1-8)

"The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate." (Pro 8:13)

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight." (Pro 9:10)

"The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short." (Pro 10:27)

"In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge." (Pro 14:26)

"The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death." (Pro 14:27)

"Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble with it." (Pro 15:16)

"The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor." (Pro 15:33)

"By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one turns away from evil." (Pro 16:6)

"The fear of the LORD leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.(Pro 19:23)

"Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day."(Pro 23:17)

"There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins." (Isa 11:1-5)

"The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is Zion's treasure." (Isa 33:5-6)

"So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied." (Act 9:31)

"Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience." (2Co 5:11
